Tips to rebuild your credit
- If you have real bad credit, start with a secured credit card. Qualifying for a Secured credit card is easy, since in essence, you are making a bank deposit that equals your credit line (less fees).
- With slightly damaged credit you can try applying for higher a rate and/or fee but still no-collateral credit card, usually called as an Unsecured Credit card.
- Keep in mind that you are trying to rebuild your credit and not trying to get into more debt! Only use the card for purchases you can afford to pay in full at the end of the month.
- Don't miss payments because credit records are so delicate that even one(!) late payment could seriously effect your rating.
- After 12-18 months of on-time payments, you can ask your secured credit card issuer to convert your card into a non-secured card often advertised as an "unsecured" credit card.
- Look for a "poor credit" credit card that doesn't charge a large application fee or any other excessive processing fees to open your account, but check their interest rates also. Some unsecured credit cards have higher fees and lower rates; choose these if you are planning to carry a significant balance. Other unsecured credit cards have lower fees but higher interest rates; choose these if you are NOT going to carry a significant balance.
- Avoid cards that do not report payments to one or more of the three major credit card bureaus, because without reporting, you won't be able to rebuild your credit.
To get a lower interest rate on your credit, you need a credit score ranging from fair to good. Building a verifiable payment history to upset the negative items on your credit report can significantly raise your credit score. You may improve your scores up to 100 points by getting a major brand or a merchant catalog credit card, which reports your in-time payments on a regular basis.
